Week 2

This week, I researched projects led by Hiroshi Ishii, the Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab. I was inspired to look further into his work after seeing his name mentioned numerous times in class as examples of interesting applications for tangible computing.

One project I found particularly fascinating was "musicBottles", a device that allows the user to play the sounds of violin, cello, and piano. Electromagnetic tags enclosed in the bottles allow them to be identified individually.

When a bottle is placed onto the stage area of the translucent table and the cork is lifted, sound is played. A light pattern is then projected onto the table to reflect changes in pitch and volume.

I found this approach of playing music fascinating, as it applies a physical element and adds sound to an object where there would normally be none. I am currently brainstorming ideas for my group project proposal, and this is a big inspiration for me.
